Author: J. J. Reneaux
Average review score:

Cajun Folk Tales
This book is full of tales to please even the hard-nosed, gonna find something wrong with it Cajun's like myself! Nothing annoys me quicker than to buy a 'Cajun' book and find it obviously written by someone who isn't. Ms. Reneaux always does a great job of depicting the truth as we see it, and recording our oral history in a way that even we (Cajuns) can recognize as our own! This book will teach you some about Cajun humor. If you want to learn more about our roots, this is a great place to start!

FROM A PERSON WHO LIVES IN THE AREA DEPICTED IN THE BOOK
I PERSONALLY KNOW JUST ABOUT EVERYONE MENTIONED IN THIS BOOK. CAROLYN DID A WONDERFUL JOB IN RELAYING OUR CULTURE INTO A BOOK. I REMEMBER WHEN SHE WAS INTERVIEWING SUSAN LAUNEY FOR THIS BOOK I ABSOLUTELY FELL IN LOVE WITH CAROLYN'S WORK. I JUST RESENTLY SEEN CAROLYN WARE AT A FESTIVAL IN MONROE, LA AND SHE IS STILL WORKING HARDER THAN EVER TO PROMOTE CAJUN HISTORY. IF YOU KNOW ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN OUR MARDI GRAS PLEASE RECOMEND THIS PARTICULAR BOOK. IT DESCRIBES OUR TRADITION (WHICH HAPPENS TO BE THE FIRST AND ORIGINAL MARDI GRAS) TO THE TEE. I APPLAUDE YOU CAROLYN WARE FOR YOUR MAGNIFISENT JOB ON THIS AND ALL OF YOUR WORK. I DO HAVE TO SAY THAT THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK ON CAJUN CULTURE BECAUSE I HAD TAKEN PART IN THIS ACTUAL BOOK. I LEARNED FROM MY FRIEND SUSAN LAUNEY HOW TO MAKE THE MASK IN THIS BOOK AND IT IS A REALLY NEAT AND INTERESTING ACTIVITY FOR ADULTS AND KIDS TO TAKE PART IN. THANK YOU CAROLYN FOR YOUR HARD WORK AND INTEREST IN OUR CULTURE. SEE YOU AT JAZZ FEST 2000 SINCERELY, RYAN FONTENOT

Cajun Music a Reflection of the People (Cajun Music, 1)
Published in Paperback by Bluebird Press (June, 1984)
Author: Ann A. Savoy
Average review score:

This book is the definitive work on the subect.
I literally stumbled upon Ann's book in a large chain bookstore in Hoboken, NJ, of all places. I had just so happened to be looking for a book on Cajun music -- and there it was right in the title! The amazing degree of research that was put into this book is obvious at first glance and the interviews and stories are absolutely priceless for anyone interested in understanding not only the music of these unique people, but also the driving forces behind them as a harmony of cultures. Ann's personal commitment is evident as she provides us with transcribed sheet music, translations from Cajun and Creole French, once forgotten tales, and old photographs that we should all feel lucky to be able to experience and enjoy.

Once you read the introduction in Cajun Stories my GranPa tole me you will want to buy everything this author has to offer.

Average review score:

Authentic Cajun/Creole Cooking
I was born and raised in southwest Louisiana, and grew up with all of the wonderful Cajun and Creole dishes in this book. This book contains excellent recipes, excellent photographs, and wonderful background text. Also, a list of suppliers is included.

This is the cookbook I have recommended to all of my friends who ask about Louisiana cooking. It's a shame that it's out of print.

Cane River Cuisine: Louisiana's Finest Recipes
Published in Hardcover by Wimmer Cookbooks (November, 2002)
Authors: Service League of Natchitoches Inc and John C. Guillet
Average review score:

Wonderful old style cooking
This is not my first time owning this book. I am actually replacing the edition my Grandmother gave me in 1988. I loaned it to someone about 3 years ago and she still hesitates to tell me when I will get it back. I don't like the fact that I haven't gotten it back but I understand why I haven't

"Cane River Cuisine" is a wonderful collection of time tested recipes by local Louisana cooks. The recipes are interesting, relatively easy to prepare and for the most part, appealing to a variety of tastes. In my opinion, it is a good cross section of Louisana cooking styles, ingredients and tastes. I say this because some of my family members come from Baton Rouge and New Orleans so I have some experience with Louisana cooking styles.

My favorite recipe in this book is the meat pies featured on the first page. The pies remind me of the ones my mother made when I was a kid. They are meaty, spicy and the crust is flaky and tender. I have served them as a main course and made smaller versions to serve as appetizers for parties. They have turned out wonderfully every time.

I have enjoyed cooking from this book. However, some people who shy away from "comfort foods" might be put off by the types of oils, cooking methods (frying) and high calorie ingredients in some of the recipes. Restraint is all though. Eating these foods (or any food) in moderation is the key maintaining one's health while enjoying some really good eats.

The book has everything you will need to cook a down home Southern meal from clever appetizers to rich, delicious deserts.

Enjoy it!

The Civil War Memoirs of Captain William J. Seymour: Reminiscences of a Louisiana Tiger
Published in Hardcover by Louisiana State University Press (July, 1991)
Authors: Terry L. Jones and William J. Seymour
Average review score:

Entertaining.
(The numerical rating above is a default setting within Amazon's format. This reviewer does not employ numerical ratings.)

Captain Seymour has left us a lively and lucid account of his Civil War experiences, from a rare account of the bombardment of Fort Jackson (New Orleans) in April 1862, to later service with the 1st Louisiana brigade with the Army of Northern Virginia.

Seymour, a New Orleans newspaperman, shows a fine disregard for accuracy which sheds no glory on his profession, but editor Jones gently footnotes the narrative with the necessary corrections.

Interesting read; worthwhile.
